SEO for Beginners: How to Appear at the Top of Google in 2026
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the practice of optimizing your site to appear in the first results of Google and other search engines. It is the digital marketing channel with the best long-term return — since a well-positioned item attracts visitors for years at no additional cost.
According to backlinko, the first organic result on Google receives an average of 27.6% of all clicks for that survey. The second receives 18.7%. From the tenth, it barely reaches 1%. The purpose of SEO is simple: to be as high as possible in the results relevant to your business.
The three pillars of SEO
SEO is divided into three major areas:
SEO on-page — What you do inside your site: content, keywords, titles, meta descriptions, URL structure, loading speed.
SEO Off-Page — What happens outside of your site: Backlinks (links from other sites for yours), mentions of your brand, domain authority.
Technical — Your site's infrastructure: indexing, sitemap, robots.txt, HTTPS, core web vitals, structured data.
For beginners, the priority should be on-page SEO — it's the one that has the most direct control and the one that brings faster results.
Keyword research: The starting point
Before writing any article, you need to know what people research. Keyword research is the process of discovering these terms and evaluating the difficulty of positioning each one.
1

On-page SEO: The Essential Optimizations
Since you have the keyword, it's time to optimize the content:
Title tag — The title that appears in Google results. It must include the main keyword and have less than 60 characters. It is the element with the greatest impact on SEO.
Meta Description — The summary that appears under the title in the results. It does not directly affect the ranking, but affects the click rate. It should include the keyword and a clear call-to-action.
H1 and H2 — The main title of the article (H1) should include the keyword. Subtitles (H2) organize the content and can include variants of the keyword.
URL Cleans — Use short and descriptive URLs: kortilink.com/blog/seo-for-beginners instead of kortilink.com/blog?id=1234.
Images with Alt Text — All images must have a descriptive alternative text, which improves accessibility and helps Google understand the content.
Backlinks: The off-page SEO currency
Backlinks — links from other sites to yours — are the most important sign of authority for Google. Each link works like a vote of confidence: Tell the algorithm that your content is valuable enough to be referenced.
How to get quality backlinks:
Guest Posts — Write articles for other blogs in your niche and include a link to your website
Linkable content — original studies, infographics, definitive guides — content that others naturally want to refer to
Haro (Help a Reporter Out) — responds to requests from journalists and bloggers and is quoted in their articles
Broken Link Building — Find broken links on other sites and suggest your content as a replacement
Speed and user experience
Google has used core Web Vitals as a ranking factor since 2021. These are user experience metrics that measure loading speed, visual stability and site interactivity. You can check your scores for free on Google PageSpeed Insights.
A slow website loses positions, regardless of the quality of the content. According to Neil Patel, 53% of mobile visitors abandon a website that takes more than 3 seconds to load.
